Hollywell secures £75,000 grant from Lloyds Foundation

We are thrilled to announce that Hollywell has been successful in securing a three year grant of £75,000 from The Lloyds Foundation! This grant has been awarded to Hollywell in recognition of our growth and future potential, enabling us to continue to grow out work in the Cornwall area. These funds will enable us to house over 30 new tenants over 3 years, providing vital housing and housing support to some of the most vulnerable people in society.

In order for us to house a tenant we have to pay up front costs of up to £2500 per person, money that we don’t get back. These funds – and all the other grant funding we have secured – help to cover the costs associated with housing a vulnerable person, allowing them to have a home of their own in the community. Check out our ‘Case Studies’ tab on the main website for some examples of some of the vulnerable people we have supported into their own home over the last 3 years.

Why is our relationship with letting agents so important?

In order to be able to provide safe, secure and good quality homes for our tenants, we have taken a lot of time to develop and cultivate our relationships with local letting agents and their landlords. ViewMe Homes in Plymouth are a letting agent in Plymouth that we have been working with since 2015. They have so far provided Hollywell with 8 properties in and around the Plymouth area and the directors of ViewMe are fully on board with the work that Hollywell does to make a difference to the lives of vulnerable people:

“ViewMe Lettings has a very supportive relationship with Hollywell Housing Trust, assisting them in locating suitable rental properties for their clients and stakeholders in and around the Plymouth locality. Specific properties are identified for each of the Trust’s clients on a case by case review, ensuring that both the client’s and the Trust’s needs are met. Out clients are more than happy to let their properties to Hollywell as the properties are frequently let for long periods and it’s basically stress free for the landlord. This is an ideal working relationship for both organisations, as each company utilises their unique expertise – which has been gained through years of experience – to promote the wellbeing of the individual clients.” Jackie Taylor – Director

Our commitment to keeping our tenants safe

Here at Hollywell Housing Trust the safety of our tenants is a prime concern – our tenants are vulnerable, many have never lived alone or held their own tenancy before and we want to ensure that they are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to keep themselves safe in their home. With this in mind, Hollywell has teamed up with the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to provide all our tenants with the advice and guidance they need to live safely. We will be organising a visit from the fire service to each of our tenants within the first 3 months of their tenancy to advise them on areas such as safe cooking, escape routes in the event of a fire, ensuring that any of our tenants who smoke do so safely at all times, as well as providing specialist equipment when necessary such as smoke alarms for those who are deaf or hard of hearing and fire safe furnishings where appropriate.

Katie Sherjan, Hollywell’s CEO, says:

“We are very pleased to be working in conjunction with the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to enable us to keep our tenants as safe as possible and empower them to manage their own home and look after themselves whilst they are living independently. Many of our tenants do not always know that some of their behaviours may put them at risk and this partnership will help to ensure that they are equipped with the information they need to reduce the risk of damage or injury caused by fire and keep themselves safe.”

Crew Manager Keith Denning is also the Partnership Manager for the collaboration and shares Hollywell’s committment to ensuring that our vulnerable tenants stay safe:

“Devon Fire Prevention Service welcome the opportunity in working as partners with Hollywell Housing Trust. Together we will work to provide information to keep the most vulnerable in society safe within our communities.”

This partnership is part of the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service “Home Fire Safety” initiative to support people to stay safe in their home and understand what they can do to minimise the risk of house fires.
